This experiment gave bet ter results in terms of wear resistance and tri bological performance. This review paper deals with the analysis of different brake pad composite materials and their wear phenomenon. The volume fraction and size distribution of non-asbestos organic airborne particles emitted from the brake pad material with time, load and speed have also been discussed under different braking conditions. The airborne particles are measured by different aerosol instruments. TSI P-Trak, GRIMM aerosol spectrometer and scanning mobility particle sizer were used by different researchers for measuring ultrafine particles, micron-sized particles and aerodynamic nanoparticles, respectively. Development of material composition for a brake pad sys tem for a sta- ble coefficient of friction is pro vided for the given envi- ronmental conditions such as pre ssure, sliding velocity, temperature and humidity. Wear partic les originating from a brake pad system contribute to particula te con- centration in the urban atmosphere. Pre vious research papers 16 have dealt with much evi dence about envi- ronmental pollution, and search for a better eco friendly frictional material from the health and enviro nmental aspect is necessary. Many research works have been conducted on interacting surfac e morphology of the brake and disc system in terms of wear and airborne particle emission. ![]() The inves- tigation showed that some correlation exists between the friction and the interacting sur face structure on the brake pad and disc system. Barros et al. 8 explored material formulation for the non -asbestos organic (NAO) and semi-metallic (SM) materials. The research revealed that the fricti on layer coverage of the NAO and SM varies according to normal loading and tem- perature variation.
